Brown Howlers inhabit southeastern Brazil (from southern Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul) and northeastern Argentina (Misiones). They occur in lowland, submontane and montane tropical forest, but also extend into semideciduous forest in the interior. Alouatta guariba are mostly folivores (leaf-eaters), but also consume fruit, buds, flowers, seeds, etc. Their larynx is enlarged permitting loud “howls”. Brown Howlers lives in groups of 4-10 individuals. Two subspecies have been recognized; A. g. clamitans is shown on this page.
